Mammoth Mountain got more snow in April than in January, February, and March combined. We had some pretty good Spring pow days over the last few weeks and that has set the mountain up for a great end to the season. Have you ever skied or boarded in Mammoth in May? You can this year because the mountain just announced they are staying open unit Memorial Day. It is a really fun time of year in Mammoth with sunny days, good snow on the slopes, melted out hiking trails...and you can find an Airbnb super cheap because it's dead in town.
The conditions are still pretty good on the hill. Coverage is amazing for this time of year and the snow is sliding nicely. It hasn't been very slushy the last few days, but expect that to change soon. Going into May, we should have fast hard snow in the mornings and it will soften quickly depending on how warm it is. If it is a t-shirt weather day, then you can expect it to be pretty soft and fun as early as 8:30 or 9. It tends to get pretty slushy and sticky on the lower runs as we get deeper into May, so get a good wax and hit up some early turns. Keep in mind that starting Monday, May 2 the mountain opens at 7:30 and closes at 3pm.
South Park is still open this weekend, April 29-May1, along with Main and Forest Trail. They had some pretty gnarly features set up South Park (Chair 4) for some Olympic training. It is supposed to be open for the public this weekend only, so head over there if you want to try some contest style features. Starting Monday we'll only have Forest Trail and Main Park when Chair 4 closes for the season. They are rebuilding the 22' half pipe and there is still one massive jump in Main Park. Forest trail has 10 or so jibs and a couple medium size jumps. Still plenty of stuff to have fun riding.
